As you may have noticed from my steel cut oatmeal post, I’ve been trying to find some alternative breakfast items to break out of my mundane cereal routine. I came across this recipe and thought it would be great to try my hand at making my own granola. This was so easy and used items I mostly keep on hand which was great! You could put this atop of yogurt, smoothies, or like I’ll share with you next week, make your own granola bars with it. If you are just using this for a topping, I would maybe add a little more honey for a sweeter taste, but if using in granola bars I would keep it as is.
Homemade Applesauce Granola
Source: Finding Joy in My Kitchen, originally Fake Ginger and Dave Lebovitz
Ingredients:
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 tbsp. honey
1 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
1/4 tsp. salt
4 cups old fashioned oats
1 tsp. cinnamon
Directions:
Preheat oven to 300 degrees.
In a medium sized pot, add the applesauce, brown sugar, honey, olive oil, and salt. Stir together and heat for just a minute or two until mixture is warm. Remove from heat and stir in the oats and cinnamon, ensuring the mixture is fully incorporated.
Spread oat mixture evenly onto a 9 x 13 baking sheet. Bake for 50 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes.
Remove from oven and let cool completely. Store in an airtight container.
Does this make for a chewy granola or a crunchy granola? Would I be able to cut this into bars or is it just a crumble style? My family loves granola but likes it a bit on the chewy side.
It’s a crumbly crunchy granola. I’ll be posting a recipe for granola bars next week though!
This looks really good. I will be pinning it .
Thanks Michelle!
What a great idea! Thanks for sharing this. I buy granola all the time. My 3 yr olds favorite breakfast is yogurt with “crunchy” on top 🙂 It’s super healthy and its fun to vary the flavor of yogurts. Totally will be trying this. I have everything in my pantry or freezer 🙂
Hope you enjoy it!:)
I need to try making my own granola and this sounds delicious with the applesauce added in. It also seems really easy to make–which I always like!
It really was very easy to make, the hardest part was stirring it every 10 minutes during the baking, but it was super easy to throw together.
This is definitely something I need in the morning! I’m excited to see your granola bars too; my current recipe has been getting boring lately… I think it’s time for something new 🙂
Thanks Ashley! Hope you like the granola bars recipe, it should be up on Tuesday!:)
Oh, how I love granola! I have a bowl every single morning for breakfast!! This looks delicious, I need to try it, I love trying new flavours 🙂
Hope you enjoy it if you try it!
How many 1/4 cup servings would this make?
This makes approx. 4 cups so it should be 7 to 8 1/4 cup servings
This looks delicious – I found this from your yummy looking s’mores granola bars. My husband refuses to eat cooked fruit but maybe if I made this and s’mores granola bars out of it, then he would eat it. How long do you think the granola by itself will last in a air tight container? Trying to transition my family into healthier eating habits but I think it might take a bit 😀
Thank you Suzie! My granola lasted quite a while (several weeks) in an air tight container.
Can you use steel cut oats instead of rolled oats?
Hey Candace! I would think you could, but I haven’t tried so I’m not sure. Sorry I’m not more help! Let me know if they work out.
Can you post the nutrition info for this recipe?
Brittany, so sorry I don’t know the nutrition info for this recipe, but here is a great recipe calculator. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/recipe/calculator Hope that helps! Have a great day! 🙂
